A federal government reports, On an average day, teens in the U.S., hundreds of thousands are smoking, drinking and taking illegal drugs.

On any given day, almost 1.2 million teenagers smoked cigarettes, 586,000 use marijauna, 631,000 drank, 3,800 used heroin, 27,000 used hallucinogens, 13,000 used cocaine, and nearly 50,000 used inhalents according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

“In the United States in 2006, one-third of adolescents aged 12 to 17 drank alcohol in the past year, one-fifth used an illicit drug and one-sixth smoked,” the report reads.

The report is based on a number of surveys, but mostly the National Survey on Drug Use, which uses in-depth interviews of more than 60,000 people.

It found that the percentage of adolescents using alcohol and drugs declined between 2002 and 2006.

“While other studies have shown that significant progress has been made in lowering the levels of substance abuse among young people in the last few years, this report shows many young people are still engaging in risky behavior,” SAMHSA Administrator Terry Cline said in a statement.

“By breaking the data down and analyzing it on a day-to-day basis, we gain a fresh perspective on how deeply substance abuse pervades the lives of many young people and their families,” he added.

The report also attempted to show how many adolescents ages 12 to 17 used illegal substances for the first time.

One any given day, it said:

– Nearly 8,000 adolescents drank alcohol for the first time

– 4,300 adolescents used an illicit drug for the first time

– 4,000 smoked cigarettes for the first time

– 3,600 adolescents used marijuana for the first time

– 2,500 youngsters abused pain relievers for the first time.

More than 76,000 children and teens were in outpatient treatment for alcohol or drug abuse, the report said, and 10,000 in non-hospital residential treatment.

Getting help for teens while they are still teenagers is crucial because being a very formidable time in a child’s life, is the consequences of inaction upon future generations. Instances of teen drug addiction run in long chains from parents to children statistics have show. This is why now is the time to stop it from forming or break the chain of teen drug addiciton. No amount of hard money, hard work, and sacrifice is worth more than stopping substance abuse from forming or breaking the chain of substance abuse. Teens drug abuse begins at home when they are influenced by their parents addictive behaviors. For example children of alcoholics (COAs) are a group of individuals who suffer from the plight of their parents alcoholism.

As a teenager, the likelihood of exposure to drugs and alcohol is very high, and there is a good chance that you will try drugs and alcohol. Even though you tell yourself that you will only try drugs once, you do it one more time, and then one more time after that, and before you know it you are developing a drug problem. One of the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse is addiction. Most teens don”t think that they will become addicted, and simply use drug and alcohol to have a good time. However, the reality of addiction to drugs and alcohol can result in some pretty undesirable consequences, such as loss of friendships, health problems, behavioral problems, alienation of family, and a loss of interest in sports, academics, hobbies, etc.

Substance abuse and addiction can greatly alter behavior, and a new preoccupation with drugs can crowd out activities that were previously important, like sports or academics. Abuse of drugs and alcohol can also change friendships, as teens begin to move away from old friends who don”t approve of their drug use and begin to associate with fellow drug users who will encourage and support one other’’s drug use. Most teens who are addicted won”t see a problem with their behavior or their drug use. Drugs make them feel good, and are a way to relieve the stress of school, problems at home, disagreements with friends, etc.

Teenage drug addiction is one of the most common problems faced by parents in the country today. Studies show that about 36 percent of teenagers in the United States are hooked different forms of illegal drugs and about one-half of American teenagers are most like to experiment on drugs before they graduate from high school. This rate is really alarming considering that many of these young people are not really aware of the negative impacts of drug addiction in their bodies. More often than not, these kids just want to have some fun that?s why they take drugs. Most these teenagers who experiment on drugs do so due to peer pressure. According to experts, young people who want to belong to ?in? crowd at school experiment on drugs to be accepted by their peers. Unfortunately, a single experiment could lead to drug addiction and a lot of troubles. In some extreme cases, these experiments can cause the loss of lives. If you are one of those parents who have teenagers at home, here are some things that you can do to stir your kid away from drug addiction.

Friends can have tremendous influence on your kid. To stir you kid away from drug addiction and other troubles, find out about your kid?s friends. Do this is a discreet and non-invasive way. Always remember that teenagers can be quite protective of their privacy. Instead of asking your kid about his or her friends, throw a barbecue party and ask your kid to invite some of his or her friends. Inviting your kid?s friends over to the house is the best way to get to know them better. You may also encourage the kids to hang around the house every now and then so that you can observe them without really appearing too nosy or something.

Being engaged in some worthwhile activities can help keep your kid away from drug addiction. If your kid is interested in some worthwhile hobby, support him or her. Make him or her feel that you are genuinely interested in what he or she is doing. For instance, if your kid in interested in sports, encourage him or her to join sports activities at school or in your community. Note that if you kid is preoccupied with something; he or she will have less chances of associating with undesirable people. Moreover, if your kid is into team activities, he or she will not only develop physically, he or she will also improve socially and emotionally.

With the pressures of society today trickling down to include our teenagers, drug addiction is the most alarming statistic of them all. With drug addiction so common amongst troubled teens the availability of drug treatment and rehab sometimes becomes the measure of last resort.

Pressure on parents to deal with their troubled teen’’s drug addiction is sometimes to overwhelming for the family to deal with even though they never stop trying to provide the love and care they believe is required to deal with the problem.

Some troubled teens with drug addiction strive under a new environment which drug treatment and rehab from professionals can provide under group and individual therapy. Rebuilding trust is a process over time and one which a teen challenges and resents at every turn especially when administered and upheld by parents.

Teenagers can be very cunning at times displaying a temporary change of behavior only to lapse into their old wayward ways as parents loosen the noose and ease any disciplinary measures they have put into place to overcome their teenagers rebellion.

Peer group pressure coming from bad influences that rely on drugs as a means of escape becomes a lifestyle, it becomes a habit which is hard to kick without rehab or drug treatment.

Teen help from professionals which provide intervention under an environment which is restrictive and isolated from any chance of drug or substance abuse can be of enormous help in the rehabilitation process. If drug addiction has consumed your troubled teen don”t be to proud to seek help in the form of drug treatment and rehab from professionals.

Drugs which are most commonly used change with time. Ecstasy(MDMA) is high on the list of problems, along with, Ice, Crack, Cocaine, Heroin, Marijuana, Methamphetamines, Amphetamines, LSD, GHB, Hallucinogens and prescription drugs. Drugs, any drugs are harmful and deadly over time and very addictive, they are designed that way to make the user dependant on them. Studies show that 19% of teenagers have taken painkillers such as OxyContin and Vicodin and 15% by the twelfth grade.

Overdoses of prescription and over-the-counter drugs are approximately one in four of the 1.3 million emergency room related to drug overdose each year. Drug addiction amongst troubled teens is a serious problem and a huge cost to society in more ways than one.

Drug treatment and rehab professionally administered is sometimes the only solution open to parents seeking help for their child’’s drug addiction. Programs are designed by these professionals to rebuild their confidence and self-esteem, teach them about health, stimulate their circulation and endorphins and detoxify drugs from their system. Most, not all but most troubled teens with a drug addiction have undeveloped maturity issues to deal with.

The programs used at drug rehab and treatment centers help teenagers to deal with issues in a more mature way so they are able to grow and mature into adulthood.

Be sure you research the many rehabilitation centers in the US which provide quality and caring assistance for drug addiction in teens.

Whatever it takes, however much it cost or wherever you need to travel to obtain the desired help and treatment it is the responsibility of all parents of troubled teens to undertake. The moment you learn of your youth’’s drug addiction, check them into a drug treatment and rehab center immediately.

Results may come slower than expected if at all so be prepared but ultimately taking measures to try and rectify the problem will ease the pain and guilt somewhat.

The cost of teen drug rehab and treatment centers do not come cheap rest assured but what are your alternatives if you don”t seek help and your child falls further into drug addiction? I assure you it will not be pretty. The day your teen is no longer dependent on their addiction and life is grand again they will be thankful you were there when they most needed you. Taking these extreme measures is something you will be thankful for when you enjoy your child’’s future successes and the raising of their own family when the time comes.

You child’’s future is dependent on your actions during these dark days you cannot hesitate in making the required decision because once the addiction has a hold on your troubled teen, professional drug treatment and rehab could be your only true avenue.
